Who we are and what we are up to ;-)
The purpose of Leaf 2 Wing is to promote the conservation and preservation of the beautiful and dwindling Monarch butterfly population in North America.
Our main goal at this time is to create a network of sustainable Monarch Butterfly Habitat Stations that contain local species of milkweed (the only plant that Monarchs will lay their eggs on) through a consortium of volunteers, land stake holders, and city-based initiatives.
Why Milkweed? Milkweed is the ONLY plant that Monarchs can successfully lay their eggs on. The Milkweed's leaf is the ONLY food source for the Monarch's caterpillar. There are no substitutes. So we have to....
Save the Milkweed, Save the Monarch!!
Our secondary goal is to provide insight and education on the Monarch by encouraging those in the community to report on Monarch and milkweed sightings, and to provide any resources that they encounter.
We are also organizing, proposing, and managing a number of Milkweed Plant restoration projects and initiatives.
The biggest reason for the decline in the Monarch population is that they rely exclusively on the milkweed plant to reproduce. Because of the toxic qualities of some species of milkweed, and the fact that many consider it to simply be a weed, it has been treated aggressively with herbicides in many areas. Because of this, Monarchs are losing the plants that are the vital core of their survival.
You can help us to grow our milkweed inventory and to create our Monarch Butterfly Habitat Stations just by reporting areas where you have seen the plant! Send us an email, or contact us on our website with the location of the milkweed and any pictures you have taken. We’ll then collect seed pods from the milkweed to store in our future Milkweed Seed Bank to help to preserve it.
